To Sabbath or Not to Sabbath: Fact#6
Hope this information is helping you to have a correct understanding of the meaning of Sabbath, let’s examine the sixth fact of this significant biblical word.
Let’s refresh our memory of the verses we have been using as our source text for our study, Genesis 2:1-3 from the English Standard Version:
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
FACT #6: Genesis 2:3 makes known to us that God blessed and made the Sabbath holy. Remember that blessing is connected with fruitfulness and dominion. God told man in Genesis 1:28 to “Be fruitful and multiply and have dominion over all the earth.” Blessing is fruitfulness and dominion. God also made holy or “sanctified” the Sabbath. He assigned it a specific function to perform. Sanctification is always for an intended purpose. In Christ we are sanctified and have an intended purpose. The true Sabbath functions to produce blessing for us. That’s why Jesus stated, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27). What Christ is saying is the true Sabbath is God’s provision for living adequately today—producing victory in a Christ-follower’s life.
Do you find yourself able to cope with the situations in life into which you are facing day after day, moment by moment? How confident are you? Are you panic-proof? God’s rest is designed to do that in your life. He makes it available for that purpose and it is the only thing that will do it—there is no substitute.
It doesn’t matter if you are an extrovert or an introvert. By our best efforts we can only obtain an inadequate level of mediocrity. Most of us are just mice studying to be rats. That’s because we depend on our own efforts— only looking to ourselves as our only resource based on personal gifts, talents, training, and education. The results of this activity yield for us either over-confidence or under- confidence. Either way we are constantly trying to compensate to make up for our lack so we don’t lose face.
God knew that this would be our problem. You can’t hide it from Him. God has put in place the Sabbath as a provision for our weakness so we now can function on a whole new level. Rest is the key. Rest your mind, your will, your emotions, your feelings in Him. Then expect the Lord to do something through you. Unless you begin to depend on His working you will never experience it…rest!
