HOLY TIME
What delights capture your attention? The world offers a
wide variety of indulgent options that can draw a believer away from what
should be their greatest satisfaction—time spent studying God’s word. To
treasure other things above the Word of God leads to trouble. Just check out
the lives of Lot in Genesis 13; 18:1-19:38 and Achan in Joshua 6-7, and King
Saul in 1 Samuel 15, and then Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 and you will see
that the idolatry of self against the truth of the Word never wins out. We need
a heart that seeks God, like Abraham in Gen 14:18-24, Moses in Hebrews
11:24-27, Mary of Bethany in Mark 14:3-9 and the apostle Paul in Philippians
3:1-11. If our heart is seeking God then our eyes will not lead us to stray
from God. We must spend time in the Word and treasure it in our hearts by
meditating upon it. “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your
ways.” (Psalm
119:15 ESV)
Having a teachable spirit will enable us to learn from the
Lord. Instead of making promises to Him that often fall short we will learn His
promises to us that will give us victory over sin. As A. W. Tozer pointed out
be more “God taught” than “man taught.” Preachers and teachers, Sunday School
and Church have their roles to play in the growth of every believer. However,
unless the truth we hear moves from our ears into our heart and lived out in
our daily lives then we really haven’t learned the Word or for that matter been
blessed by it. James 1:22-25 says that the real blessing comes when after
hearing the Word we are compelled in doing the Word.
We must take time to be holy. Charles Spurgeon said, “There
are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than
speech.” Getting alone to meditate on His Word gives us the spiritual strength
to do the work He has called each of us to do. Studying the Word is the proper
nutrition for our soul. We spend large amounts of time and money to maintain
proper physical health but neglect the time and resources to be holy.
Our bodies are not developed simply by opening our mouth and
shoving in some food. In order for muscles, nerves, bones, and tissue to mature
the process of digestion must take place. Digestion breaks down the substance
that entered the mouth in order for the inner workings of be body to assimilate
it more effectively. Your spirit will never be nourished by just listening to
divine truth. Only when you digest (meditate / study) the Truth, will the Word
be beneficial to your life.
Make for some holy time. Meditate on His
precepts!
