GAMING PRACTICE

I remember the first year I played Junior High football—I think it is called Middle School these days. That was many years ago. There was a guy who suited out for the team. He was small, not very athletic and had no previous experience playing football. At practice, he would routinely get the stuffing knocked out of him by the bigger guys on the team. He was a real-life blocking dummy. I thought this kid would ultimately tire from the beating his body was taking on the field and quit. I was wrong. This kid faithfully showed up for practice every day. During the first or second game of the season, the coach went over to this kid – who had certainly paid his dues during practice time and told him that he wanted him to go into the game. The dude’s response surprised everyone. “I don’t want to play, coach.” I just thought he was afraid of getting hurt in a real game. After the game the coach gathered the team around and had a talk with him. “Look,” he said, “a game is r...

QUICK TO FORGET

Ten years ago, I traveled with my mom, Robert, and Carrie in their RV to Washington DC for the 912 march. It was a fun and insightful trip. The event began with a mile hike up Pennsylvania Ave. to the Capitol. I thought it would be rowdy and raucous.   To my surprise it was not.   Everyone around me seemed to be in my shoes—just taking in the spectacle around them. No one was pushing, shoving or stumbling about. It was just a multitude of invigorated concerned citizens peacefully marching toward the epicenter, the Nation’s Capital, the physical structure representing the sum total of our Republic, to vocalize concern over the many issues our country was facing in that pivotal time in our nation’s history. Being on Capitol Hill with so many others was indeed a mountaintop experience that I hope will not become just a faded memory. Moses might agree. After leading the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses and the people came to the desert in Sinai. There the people camped i...

WALK THIS WAY!

Isaiah spoke these words to the people of Zion a long, long time ago. “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way; walk in it” —Isaiah 30:21. This was a time long before the world could even dream about Global Positioning Systems. I have a GPS it is incorporated into the radio so it fits seamlessly into the dash of my pickup. The first time I used it and heard some female’s voice telling me to get ready to turn right, then left and then telling me I had arrived at my destination, I thought this is way too cool. If my grandfather could have slipped out of heaven and joined me in that truck, he would have said, “God is telling us where to go!” God the Holy Spirit is your spiritual GPS. He is the voice behind you that says, “This is the way, walk in it.”   The Living Bible says it this way… “And if you leave God’s paths and go astray, you will hear a Voice behind you say, No, this is the way; walk here.” ...
