FAITH JOURNEY

According to my wife there have been times (too many!) when we have decided to go out for dinner, hopped into the truck and started driving around looking for a place to eat. I know where I’m headed —dinner— but not where I’m going.

The idea of knowing where I’m headed but not where I’m going reminds me of the Christ-follower’s journey. When we respond in faith to Christ, we begin a lifelong faith-journey. We are called to follow Him. But, life’s situations and experiences are always changing. We’re confronted with detours along the way that begin to be the norm rather than the exception. So, we face our faith-journey one day at a time, trusting that we know where we’re headed even when we can’t clearly see where we’re going. Faith makes our journey possible and worthwhile.

In the Old Testament book of Genesis we read about Abraham’s life story. His story is encouraging because his faith-journey in one way or another is similar to what God is calling all of us to. God called Abraham to leave his home and everything familiar to go to a land and people he did not know. He knew where he was headed even though he didn’t know where he was going. “It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him as his inheritance. He went without knowing where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8 NLT). Abraham’s life was a journey filled with ups and downs, wise and not-so wise decisions, victories and complete failures. Nonetheless, through it all, the Bible says, “Abraham believed God, so God declared him to be righteous.”

At this juncture in your life you may feel that you are wandering. You might not have any idea where you are going in life. Become obedient. Become more active in following Christ. Be comforted in the truth that God holds you and this day in the palm of His hand. It is in His hands, where your faith-journey begins.
