MEEKNESS IS

The person whose character would be described as meekness would be imagined a sissy by most folks. There are cultural biases toward this word that are hard to shake. But despite what people think, meekness is not a synonym for weakness. To be meek doesn’t mean to be weak, spineless and cowardly, effeminate and timid, or geeky!

Jesus said of the meek that they will gain the earth. “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5

Through the optics of Scripture and the language of the New Testament a meek person is one who has power and ability that is brought under the control of the Holy Spirit to be used in constructive and redemptive ways just as a wild horse is trained and broken and its power is harnessed and brought under control. Biblical meekness is an attitude of submission and humility before God which manifests itself in a spirit of gentleness and consideration toward others.

Christ-follower how do you feel about being labeled meek? You would be in good company. Moses, it says in Numbers 12:3, he was the meekest man who ever lived. He never thought he had what it took to be God’s leader but he was obedient to God and faced mighty Egypt’s Pharaoh and delivered God’s children out of slavery and some other cool an notable stuff. Bottom line he was clay that God molded because he was willing to give God what little he had. He was willing to answer God’s call and do what God wanted him to do.

If you would walk in meekness and embrace the attitudes of humility and gentleness surrendering your desire to defend your reputation and crucify your stubborn pride and stop losing sleep over what others think of you and become a servant to others you would find a great deal of freedom, peace and rest and the earth would level out beneath your feet.

I don’t want to mislead you.  There is a price to your inheritance. What has to happen for you to claim an inheritance? Someone has to die! Check out Romans 6. Paul says that the old life was crucified! Then you will be ready to live as Christ instructed in Matthew 11:28. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…for I am meek and lowly of heart.”

Meekness is a challenge to think in a different way than the world thinks and to act in a different way than the world acts. Meekness is the challenge for you lay your life down. Meekness challenges you not to grasp but to give. Meekness is allowing the One who is meek and lowly to rule in your heart and life. Therefore, Live for Jesus!
