EXCEPTIONAL WATER
The sultry days of July are upon us. The summer months put
us on notice that the sun is out the heat is up and the rain is for the most
part non-existent. This has been the status for the past five years in north
Texas as we have experienced an “exceptional drought.” But the recent heavy rains of April and May
have help us to emerge from the worst of its effects filling our lakes to
overflowing and greening up the vegetation that is usually brown and brittle by
this time of year. Times of drought make us appreciate the benefits of needed
rain — summer or winter.
In these days mankind is experiencing an exceptional drought
of self-sacrifice. It is hard to find lives flowing with streams of living
water giving value, virtue, and morality to the society by the means of truth.
Instead there are lives of self-fulfillment becoming boundless reservoirs of
progressive morality simply guided by their inward goodness. Self has become
autonomous in determining society’s destiny.
It won’t always be this way. Zechariah says the day of the
Lord is coming and, “On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem,
half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in
winter. And the Lord will be king over
all the earth. On that day there will be one Lord—his name alone will be
worshiped.” (Zechariah 14:8-9)
In these days we may be found faithless but God is faithful.
As Christ-followers we should be rejoicing now because there is not a drought
long enough nor summer hot enough or winter cold enough to cancel out the
Lord’s faithfulness. Though seasons of this world change our Lord is always the
same—winter summer or spring time and harvest. His love runs deep and wide and
over flowing. The cares of this life with their scorching trials leave us
parched in our souls. We need to
immediately make our way to the cool refreshing rivers of His grace. There we
drink from and endless supply — winter or summer — of the fountain of living
water. Drink your fill. You need this water for today.
People will come and people will go but God goes
on forever. No self-determining nature or progressive human endeavor can divert
the current of His divine grace! Blessed be the name of the Lord for His
overflowing overcoming river of relief! May God continue to lead us beside His
streams of exceptional water.
